PROJECT OVERVIEW

Scotchland offers a platform to log your scotch preferences—whether they’re favourites or not quite to your taste, ones you own, or those on your wishlist. It enables you to rate, review, and compare scotches, as well as share your experiences with friends and the wider Scotchland community. Dive into a world of discovery with personalized scotch recommendations. Leveraging cutting-edge image recognition technology, app identifies scotches from user-uploaded images, delivering comprehensive details like region, distillery, cost, average rating, and distillery score for each scotch.

WHY THIS PROJECT?

‘My journey into the world of scotch began when I was 22 years old, a time when my knowledge of scotch was minimal, to say the least.’

The realization that scotches, rich in variety and flavor, originated from different regions of Scotland was an eye-opener for me. This sparked a quest for knowledge, leading me to devour books and articles to understand the nuances of scotch. While there’s a wealth of information online, I found that the websites offering this knowledge often felt as ancient as the tradition of scotch drinking itself.

Unique
Interface

Driven by a desire to modernize how we explore and enjoy scotch, I envisioned an app with a distinct interface. This app would serve not just as a repository but as a dynamic tool for enthusiasts to catalogue, learn about, and track their scotch adventures.

User Experience Design

At the heart of Scotchland lies a commitment to stellar user experience design. This commitment guided me into conducting thorough user research, ensuring the app’s design truly resonates with its intended audience.

Evolution of Expertise

Scotchland has been more than a project; it’s been a journey of growth and skill improvement. Through my experience in the AAU Web Design and New Media program, I’ve refined my skills, inching Scotchland closer to becoming user-focused platform.

About the process

In the Scotchland project, my design process was meticulously tailored to elevate ideas into engaging, meaningful experiences. I harmonized creativity with strategic planning, guiding the project from its conceptual roots through wireframing stages, all the way to delivering a refined, polished design. The core objective throughout was to forge not only an aesthetically pleasing interface but to ensure it was eminently functional and intuitive for the user.

Key to this endeavor was a focus on crafting intuitive navigation and effective data visualization, ensuring that every aspect of the user’s journey through Scotchland was both seamless and insightful. Through iterative design driven by ongoing user feedback, I was able to continuously refine the UI, enhancing its usability and effectiveness with each iteration. This process underscores a commitment to evolving the user experience to its pinnacle of performance and satisfaction.

01.

Discover

In the initial stage, I embarked on comprehensive user and market research to grasp the unique needs and challenges of my target audience. This deep dive into the preferences of scotch enthusiasts set a solid foundation for the entire project.

02.

Define

With insights in hand, my next step was to define the project’s scope, objectives, and essential features. This phase involved translating my research findings into a concrete plan that would guide the subsequent stages of development.

03.

Develop

During development, I focused on bringing the vision of Scotchland to life. This involved prototyping, creating mood boards to encapsulate the project’s essence, and designing a logo that embodied Scotchland’s identity. This phase was a creative endeavor, aimed at shaping the project into a tangible product.

04.

Deliver

The final phase was centered on refining the UI design, integrating user feedback from the testing phases to ensure the end product aligned with our initial goals and exceeded user expectations. This stage was dedicated to fine-tuning Scotchland, ensuring a seamless and engaging experience for the users upon launch.

MARKET RESEARCH

Competitor
Analysis

As the app store marketplace expands, so does the proliferation of applications tailored for beverage enthusiasts, including wine, whiskey, and cocktail aficionados. Yet, among this variety, there exists a notable gap: a dedicated application for scotch connoisseurs is conspicuously absent. This void in the market means that the specific needs and desires of scotch enthusiasts remain largely unaddressed, highlighting an opportunity for a specialized solution.

Bars would be incentivized to promote Scotchland, potentially offering special deals through the app, similar to promotions on Yelp. Distilleries can advertise their scotches within the app, boosting visibility and engagement with scotch enthusiasts.

Wireframes play a crucial role in the Scotchland project by defining the structural layout and functionalities of the mobile app. Specifically designed for Scotchland, these wireframes visualize the user journey, ensuring that the app effectively caters to the needs of scotch enthusiasts.

Furthermore, they allow for early identification of any potential issues and provide a foundation for future enhancements based on user feedback. In the context of Scotchland, wireframes serve as a blueprint for creating a seamless and intuitive user experience tailored to scotch tracking, exploration, and sharing.

User Testing
Results

After conducting user testing, I obtained important conclusions about user interaction, identifying problematic points and gaining insights for further improvements. The changes I made after testing have contributed to the creation of a product that is more convenient and meets the expectations of users, enhancing their overall experience with a singular focus on individual needs and preferences.

Problem

Solution

Users can’t find a way to add a specific scotch to their profile.
‘Add’ button added. Now the user can track if they like, dislike, own, or want to try that scotch.
Users were getting confused by the “Compare” tab. They were not sure what it did.
Changed the name of the “Compare” tab to “Reviews” tab. Users were able to easily identify that section and it’s purpose.
Majority of users thought the edit button was unnecessary because users organically tap in most areas to see what works and doesn’t as a first time user.
I removed it completely. Users can now tap on the text area and the keyboard will pop up, allowing them to edit their text.
Testers suggested to add an option that allows the user to view reviews by their scotch buddies (people they follow) and by everyone who uses the app.
Added toggle for Reviews tab that allows the user to see what just their buddies are saying verses everyone that uses it.
